01
Cut out the clutter
If you’re a student and find yourself in such a dilemma, it can sure feel stressful and frustrating. So how do you put your head down and ensure that you’re ‘hitting the books’ in an effective manner? Fret not. Follow these tips that can help you conquer your exams – and your fears!
02
Find an ideal spot
Home may not always be the most conducive place for studying. Distractions such as your bed and the fridge can take you away from your books. Instead, find somewhere where you can be alone and away from disturbances. A library is a good place to start!
Once you’ve settled down, set study targets to keep yourself on track. If you’re worried that you may get stuck with questions or topics, ask a friend along. But be sure that he or she can be of help when you need it.
03
Put it to the test
Not sure if you’ve fully understood a subject matter? Break down the material into bite-sized sections and create little quizzes to test yourself. Find out where the gaps are and focus on these weaker areas before taking the quiz again. Don’t try to absorb large chunks of information in one go as it may overload your brain.
04
Don’t get social
Avoid getting sucked into the mindless abyss of scrolling through social media. The temptation is great and you might think of it as a harmless way of taking a break. But your mind can easily wander off and take focus away from what you need to be doing. What feels like minutes spent on social media can turn out to be a lot more in reality.
Also, put your phone away if you can and set yourself a couple of hours to be ‘contactless’. This way, you’ll be less compelled to check your phone every now and then.
05
Stock up on study ‘fuel’
Brain work can be draining. So it’s always wise to eat balanced meals to maintain your energy levels. If you’re looking for a quick way to ‘refuel’, drink a bottle of health essence or energy drink which can help you stay alert and focused.
06
Don’t cram your style
Cramming is never a good way to study. You’ll only end up overwhelming yourself. Avoid this by planning way ahead of time and starting your revisions early. It helps to put together a study calendar containing intermediate goals that you should be achieving along the way.
